Join the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice, the Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Luke Syson, and the Director of the Hong Kong Palace Museum, Dr Louis Ng, for a fascinating discussion of how museums can open up the past to help an understanding of today’s world, acknowledging the ways art, images and objects have shaped beliefs, challenged assumptions and launched new ideas, and continue to do so.

As vibrant spaces where history, art and cultural identity come alive, learn how museums play a crucial role in cultivating conversation, and how international collaboration is vital for the future. 

The evening will include drinks and canapes, and an opportunity to network with fellow alumni.

Professor Deborah Prentice

Professor Deborah Prentice

Professor Deborah Prentice became the University of Cambridge’s 347th Vice-Chancellor on July 1, 2023.

An eminent psychologist, Professor Prentice carried out her academic and administrative career at Princeton University, which she first joined in 1988. She rose through the academic ranks and took on administrative responsibilities of increasing scope, chairing the Department of Psychology for 12 years, serving as Dean of Faculty for three years, and then serving six years as Provost, with primary responsibility for all academic, budgetary, and long-term planning issues.

Her academic expertise is in the study of social norms that govern human behaviour – particularly the impact and development of unwritten rules and conventions, and how people respond to breaches of those rules. She has edited three academic volumes and published more than 50 articles and chapters, and she has specialised in the study of domestic violence, alcohol abuse and gender stereotypes.

The University Council nominated Professor Prentice for appointment as Vice-Chancellor in September 2022.

Luke Syson

Luke Syson is the fourteenth Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum. From 2012-19, he was Chairman of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where he led on the complete refurbishment of the British Galleries, a $22m project, which opened in March 2020. Luke has held curatorial positions at the British Museum, V&A and the National Gallery – where he led the successful campaign to acquire Raphael’s Madonna of the Pinks for the nation and curated the highly-acclaimed exhibition, Leonardo da Vinci – Painter at the Court of Milan in 2011.  Since arriving in Cambridge, he has overseen a series of acclaimed exhibitions, ranging from ‘Hockney’s Eye’ to ‘Gold of the Great Steppe’ and 'Glenn Ligon: All Over The Place', from ‘Black Atlantic’ to ‘Real Families’, and the refurbishment of the Fitzwilliam’s primary paintings galleries.

Dr Louis Ng

Dr Louis Ng

Dr Louis Ng is a seasoned museum professional, historian, and arts administrator with over thirty years of experience in museum planning and management. Dr Ng joined Hong Kong’s public museum service in 1988 as an assistant curator and rose through the ranks to become a chief curator in 2002, after working in several curatorial and managerial positions at various museums. He was the founding Director of the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence opened in 2000. Prior to joining the Hong Kong Palace Museum in August 2019, he was Deputy Director of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, overseeing the department’s culture-related institutions, including museums, performing art venues, visual arts centres, and public libraries. A distinguished historian, Dr Ng obtained his BA, MPhil and PhD in history from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies from the University of Sydney. His research and publications focus on Hong Kong history and cultural heritage management.
