Have you blown your top recently?   Mother Earth manages to do so with a degree of regularity. Whether you have watched the 1968 film ‘Krakatoa, East of Java’ (it is of course actually west of Java), marvelled at the continuing finds at Pompeii, visited Santorini or watched this year’s activity from Etna or at Grindavik, she continues to amaze and destroy. So it is not inappropriate that we should take this opportunity to know more about this natural phenomenon.

The speaker at our next meeting on Saturday 13th July is Chris Marshall.  He was in the RAF for 36 years as a pilot flying fast-jet aircraft, including the Harrier, retiring in 1997 as a Wing Commander. He then spent 18 years at Bournemouth and Southampton airports as Chief Flying Instructor training pilots for commercial licences and ratings.  He has been studying geology for the last 18 years, is a member of the Open University Geological Society, and is classed as an amateur geologist. He became fascinated by volcanology, and has put together an illustrated talk which covers the basic processes and then then looks at some famous eruptions and how they affected the world.

Location information:

The Club is situated just behind the old Ashington Post Office on Gravel Hill.  Drive through the big blue gates and follow on to the spacious car park near the main building. The excellent sporting facilities will be evident.  It originated, you may recall, as a club for the staff of Flight Refuelling, which was such an important part of our local industrial history in the 20th century, and the Club’s buildings contain many mementoes of Sit Alan Cobham and aviation history. There are no special facilities for those of limited mobility, but there is ample parking close to the venue and easy access.
