The different faces of Romania: History, Culture, Architecture
Romania is home to a variety of historical and cultural traditions that reflect the country's long-standing connections with the Slavic, Hungarian and Germanic worlds as well as its adherence to its ancient Romance heritage.
This is expressed in the variety of buildings and works of art that can be found in different parts of the country, most notably in the Orthodox monasteries of Wallachia and Moldavia and in the mediaeval churches and citadels of the German settlers in Transylvania. Influences from Byzantium, Hungary, Serbia, the Ottoman world and others make for a particularly rich tapestry of cultural and artistic treasures in Romania.

Dr Alex Koller (Magdalene 1993)
Dr Alex Koller was born in Vienna in 1969, studied History of Art and Slavonic Languages at the Universities of Vienna, Salzburg and Cambridge. Involved in cultural travelling/study tours as a lecturer since 1998 with an emphasis on Eastern Europe, Russia and the Far East. Research interests include aspects of architectural design in the Balkans and in Buddhist temple architecture. Regular contributions to Lumley & Koller architectural practice.
