This talk combines history of science, the physics of vibrating drum membranes, and musical performance on the Indian Tabla.

It will discuss the unique construction and sound of the Tabla and tell the story of how it inspired the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics. The talk will also include components of musical performance and introduce rhythmic composition on the instrument.

Dr Deepak Venkateshvaran

Dr Deepak Venkateshvaran

Dr Deepak Venkateshvaran is a Fellow and Director of Studies in Physics at Selwyn College Cambridge. He holds a Royal Society University Research Fellowship at the Cavendish Laboratory where he studies mechanical properties of functional materials on the nanoscale. Deepak is also seconded to the Department of Science Innovation and Technology of the UK Government, where he contributes to the development of the UK's national strategy on advanced materials.
